Wear
When the disc wears, it becomes less efficient at dissipating heat, which in turn affects the performance.
Cracking
The disc is subject to continued brake applications as it wears and this can result in cracking. Any disc which is cracked, no matter how small, MUST be replaced immediately as it is dangerous.
Corrosion
A disc which has corroded prematurely is a possible sign that another part of the braking system is not operating correctly.
Scoring
If the surface of the brake disc is scored or scratched in any way, this will decrease the brake’s efficiency so should be replaced. You should also check the condition of the pads for any sign of foreign material between the pads and the disc surface.
Blueing
Blueing is an indication of excessive heat being generated and the shades of discolouration range to deep blue.
